Imagine you’re sitting at home one afternoon when a group of armed Federal agents bang on your door and demand you let them in.

Sign the petition!

For 24 year old Manuel Marron Marquez this occurred just a couple months ago. ICE agents appeared claiming to be looking for a fugitive on the wanted list. Manuel and his family, full of fear and confused, felt like they had no choice but to let the officers in. Manuel tried explaining to the officers that he and his family had no idea of who they were looking for and where they could be staying.

However ICE officials did not believe him, they demanded to see documentation and went on to unlawfully interrogate him. After discovering that Manuel is an undocumented immigrant and is not in the U.S. lawfully he was arrested and taken into custody. He is not charged with criminal charges nonetheless he is still being detained in Immigration custody at the Battle Creek jail, he spent the holidays sitting in a jail waiting hopelessly.

All this occurred over two months ago and Manuel is still facing deportation. He was denied bond because he does not qualify for any long term relief under current immigration laws.

Manuel was brought to the United States when he was less than two years old. He graduated from high school despite of his learning disabilities and dreams of going to college. He financially supports his widowed mother, and his siblings who are U.S. citizens, including one who has a serious mental condition.

Manuel is now twenty four years old. He does not know or remember anything about Mexico. He cannot speak or write in Spanish and has no family in Mexico. He is a DREAM eligible student full of potential.
However his future is looking dim. He sits every day in a jail like a criminal. He deserves an opportunity to fulfill his goals and go on to college. His family, his friends, and his community are supporting him but we need you to sign his petition too.

Everyday Manuel spends in detention is another day that his mom and his siblings must endure of suffering.

SIGN THE PETITION!

Make a Phone Call Now:

1. Call ICE John Morton: 202-732-3000
2. Call DHS Janet Napolitano: 202-282-8495

Sample Script: “I am calling to ask that DREAMer Manuel Marron Marquez (A # 200 298 740) be release & allowed to stay in the U.S. Manuel has been living in this country since the age of two and dreams of continuing his education and supporting his U.S citizen siblings. Manuel is DREAM Act eligible and shouldn’t be deported. Don’t deport Manuel.”

Time is running out for Cesar! On July 21st, Cesar was pulled over by a police officer over a minor traffic violation. Instead of giving him a ticket, the officer arrested Cesar for driving without a license and ICE detained him soon after. Today marks Cesar’s 60th day in detention; away from his family and friends. Every day that Cesar wakes up, he wonders if it will be his last day in the United States.

On Wednesday, October 19th at 2pm, we will show ICE that Cesar has the support of his community and that we will fight for him until he is released and his deportation be stopped. But we need you there with us! ,will you join us as we take action to stop Cesar’s deportation?

WHEN: Wednesday October 19
2:00pm-3:30pm

WHERE: Detroit ICE Headquarters
333 Mt. Elliott St.
on corner of W.Jefferson
Detroit, MI 48207

President Obama has said deporting undocumented youth is not a priority, but if that’s true, why is Cesar still detained?

If we don’t take action now, Cesar could be deported back to a country he no longer remembers. As a DREAM Act student who has proven to be a contributing member of his community, it is unacceptable that ICE wants to deport him. Cesar needs us and we know we can count on you to be there for him every step of the way.

Join us on Wednesday as we demand that ICE release Cesar back to a community that loves him. Bring your friends and family!

See you there!

Now 24, Cesar is a dedicated and productive member of his community. Despite having their overwhelming support, Cesar finds himself fighting his deportation to Mexico, a country he no longer considers his home.

Sign the petition here

On August 21st, Cesar was pulled over by the police over a minor traffic violation. After finding out his immigration status, the police officer arrested and detained Cesar. He has been in detention for almost a month now, waiting to be deported to a place he no longer remembers. Every day that Cesar wakes up in detention signifies a loss for his family and his community. Cesar cannot fathom the idea of leaving his parents and younger sister behind. He dreams of the day he can return back to his family and community in Michigan.

Cesar is an outstanding student. He attended Sturgis High School and received many awards for his academic involvement. He faced many obstacles but he made every effort to make it in school, going to classes in the morning and taking English as a Second Language classes in the afternoons. His hard work paid off as he was recognized for his academic achievement when he obtained his high school diploma in 2010.

Cesar is also an active member of his church, Holy Angel Parish where is known as a great role model to the young members of his community. Cesar loves music, playing soccer, and has big plans for his future. Cesar knows his family works hard to make an honest life for themselves and he wants nothing more than to contribute to society. If he is deported, however, he will be separated from everything that he loves and won’t be able to fulfill his dreams.

Cesar would qualify for the DREAM Act, a narrowly tailored bill that majorities in both the House and Senate voted to support this past December. Both President Obama and Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano have stated that DREAM Act eligible youth are not a priority for deportation. In a recent announcement, Secretary Napolitano stated new guidelines for Prosecutorial Discretion. According to these guidelines, Cesar is not deemed a priority for removal by DHS and merits a favorable exercise of discretion.

Cesar exemplifies what it means to be an American and should be allowed to stay in the U.S. to live his American Dream. Cesar has big dreams of going to college so he can continue to be a role model and mentor to young kids in his community. Please help keep Cesar in the country with his family and supportive community.

For Immediate Release:
Media Contact: Jose Franco
313-721-5056 media@1michigan.org

Local Student Testifies in First Ever Senate DREAM Act Hearing

Student recently was granted deferred action and DREAM Act is only hope to fix status

Washington D.C, 6/28/2011- Ola Kaso, a recent graduate of Cousino High School in Warren, MI will testify in the first ever Senate committee hearing on the DREAM Act. The DREAM Act would allow undocumented students a path to citizenship through 2 years of college or military service. Students would have to have arrived before the age of 16, been here for 5 consistent years, have no criminal history, and have a high school degree or GED.

Ola Kaso recently faced deportation back to Albania. She came to the United States when she was four years old. Due to negligence of Ola and her mother’s attorney, Ola and her mother both faced deportation to a country they no longer considered home.

With the support of One Michigan, a youth and immigrant led organization advocating for immigrant rights, Ola was granted deferred status. During this campaign to stop her deportation, One Michigan with the help of the Kaso family was able to collect over 10,000 signatures.

Ola was granted deferred action which means her deportation is delayed for another year. The only true hope for Ola is the passage of the DREAM Act “Every time we see a student like Ola with a 4.4 grade point average, we are reminded of the need for the DREAM Act. That is why this hearing is so important. The DREAM Act needs to be a legislative priority as we continue to see students like Ola facing deportation.” states Dayanna Rebolledo, lead organizer of One Michigan.

WHEN: Tuesday, June 28 2011 10:00 AM CSPAN
WHERE: Senate Immigration Sub-Committee Washington D.C
WHAT: Senate Hearing on DREAM Act

###

One Michigan is an organization led by immigrant youth and supported by strong allies. We work towards providing resources to immigrant communities through organizing, education, and empowerment. We answer to and are driven by the needs of our community.
