May 5, 2010 is a day I will never forget. I remember waking up to the phone call that informed me that Ivan was arrested by ICE, along with his mother, and was now being moved to a jail to await his deportation. I will not forget the frantic calls that I made, along with sitting with Ivan’s stepfather as I cried, repeating that “Everything will not be okay.” My life would never be the same again. The next three and half months would consist of reaching out to whomever I could, all while hearing many people tell me that they wouldn’t help and that Ivan would be deported no matter what I did. If someone told me that in a year on that same day I would be standing next to Ivan, who I would then be married to, at the White House for the Cinco de Mayo celebration, I would have said they were crazy. But yet that is exactly where we found ourselves on the anniversary of Ivan’s arrest.

I write this in a time of great sadness, disappointment, frustration. I write this as I see the sad faces of my friends stained with tears. As I hug and whisper “It’s going to be okay” to the bravest, most hard working and dedicated people I’ve ever had the privilege of meeting.
I know the pain inside their hearts, the frustration and disappointment of being so close and having it all fall apart. But before we fall into a pit of despair and bitterness I ask you, I ask my dearest members of One Michigan, to not lose hope. We have grown so much in the past few months, together and as individuals. We’ve come too far to let a bunch of old bitter politicians tell us what we can and cannot do with our lives

How to call congress:
If you have never called a member before don’t stress. It is pretty easy:
1. Dial the switchboard 1-866-587-3023
2. Ask operator for a member from the target list
3. When receptionist picks up leave a message urging the member to vote yes on DREAM.
The week of DREAM Act is finally here and we need to step it up right now. We are focusing on calls all this week and need you to really step it up here. Below is a detailed target list, you can easily call all of the members and leave a quick message of support, if you can’t for whatever reason call everyone then pick at least 5 from each list and call them.
